GEMS Origin Stories - Toyota Corolla AE86

A look back at the origins of General Engine Management Systems Limited (GEMS)

Every company has a starting point

For GEMS, the major breakthrough was in 1984, with a clear engineering challenge: developing a bespoke ECU built for tuning the 1.6-litre Toyota Corolla AE86 engine (4A-GE) for rally racing applications.

The AE86 earned its reputation through lightness, balance, response, and driver involvement. Famously piloted by John Midgley and Per Eklund, Toyota GB’s rally campaign in Group A was an overwhelming success with individual stage wins globally, earning them the overall victory in the 1984 British Open championship. The Toyota Corolla AE86 running our GEMS ECU was also raced in the Dunlop RAC British Touring Car Championship where Chris Hodgetts became British Touring Car Champion and Toyota became the overall manufacturer champion consecutively in 1986 and 1987.

Built Around Motorsport Needs

From the beginning, GEMS was built around solving real problems for competitors. Rather than creating electronics in isolation, the focus was on listening to teams, understanding what vehicles needed in competition, and developing control systems that could deliver reliability, flexibility, and usable performance.

The ECU solution for the Toyota Corolla rally and touring cars fast tracked GEMS to become a pioneer of engine management systems and became part of a much bigger journey. Since then, GEMS has continued designing and building competition engine management systems, expanding into transmission control, data acquisition, power management, and high-brightness display systems for motorsport, aviation, automotive and other demanding industries.

The Same Spirit Today

While the technology has evolved, the organisation’s ethos remains the same: engineer around the application, build for demanding environments, and support customers with systems that are proven where performance matters most helping GEMS earn the reputation of being a very user-friendly company.

From the Toyota AE86 raced on rally stages to all the various sectors we work in today, GEMS’ heritage is rooted in motorsport problem-solving — and that continues to drive us forward.
