Subaru 99 V2.31 RS232 logging info

Post by loic_G_FR » Wed Sep 04, 2019 12:53 pm

Hi,
I am currently building a dashboard to receive logging information from a Subaru 99 V2.31 ECU using RS232, I have read the manual and see the logging description at the end.
in order to recalculate the checksum to verify the string is correct I will need an example with real Numbers so I can send them to my Dashboard from HyperTerminal software in order to test.
do you have an example of logging Stream received from an ecu in order for me to test before connecting to the cars ECU ?
Thanks.

Good morning.
I will ask the development team if they have a test RS232 stream but we usually use simulator driven ECUs to create telemetry streams, whether they be RS232 or CAN.

However, I will ask and post the response here...

thanks Rick
even a simulator Stream would be fine but I thought your simulated ecu was ethernet based only.
Anyway I Don't have the license so I can't use the simulator.

No - I/we use external engine simulators (similar to a 'JimStim' if you have heard of that), that generates all the engine signals (Crank, Cam, Temps and pressures) to test an ECU. If the type of ECU being tested allows the transmission of a logged Serial and/or CAN telemetry stream, then that is passed from the ECU to either Data Analysis software or a hardware device, such as a display or logging device. The telemetry stream is not captured, just utilised.

Even GPS over Serial is carried out with 'real' devices and not pre-programmed data. We have CAN telemetry tools, where we can create streams but unfortunately, that is not the issue here.

I thought that the development guys had a standalone RS232 generator of some kind, and as I mentioned earlier, if I find something that might help, I'll post it here (and if I don't, I'll post that here also..!)

A fair bit of head scratching and some think that there might be some old legacy software buried somewhere.
It's being looked into.

In the meantime, have you tried ... www.aggsoft.com/com-port-emulator.htm ...?
From their comprehensive website, Aggsoft state that the COM Port Data Emulator is a tool for emulating a com port or an Ethernet device, that generates a serial stream of data. The program can create a data flow, wrap it to data packets (RS232, TCP/IP or UDP) and send to a port.

It might get you what you need.

It is only the data that is missing !!!

OK....
Just had a discussion with our Technical Director, who tells me that the feature/software we're discussing, is now embedded in GWv4 and is called Serial Data Logging & Monitoring. And that is what it does, it logs and monitors, so does not 'generate' a serial data stream. As you have no licence to allow you to connect the Sub99 to GWv4, this wouldn't be of any assistance anyway..!

What is being suggested is that you grab something like freeserialanalyzer from freeserialanalyzer.com and use the Subaru ECU to generate an RS232 stream, that you can then capture, tailor, manipulate and re-transmit as you want.

Sorry that we can't provide exactly what you are after... and good luck.
Best regards, RickS
