Very good question, so good, I gave it its own thread.

GIN Files:
These are files which our calibration software GWv4 uses to translate the information coming from the ECU. It tells the software what maps/tables/parameters the ECU has so can display them correctly. It allows the software to support any number of ECUs and versions without its self being changed/updated. Whilst GWv4 now is supplied with a large number of GIN files, newer files may be missing. GIN files are generally only used by our ECU and diff controllers, but some data-loggers may also use them.

FIN File:
Firmware files by another name. These are a compiled binary version of the actual software which runs inside the product itself. This can be uploaded (with extreme caution!) to a product and will change in some way how the product works. They are often provided by GEMS to provide new features or fixes to existing products.
