Post by Panosrc » Mon May 23, 2016 10:14 pm

Hi. I am new here and I am very happy that I bought an escort csowrth with GEMS P8 ecu. My question is how can I connect that ecu with my pc and map it ? Do I have to buy some cable? Unfortunately I dont have any idea! Thanks!

Good morning,
Yes, you will need a Serial-USB converter cable, GWv4 software and a USB licence dongle to be able to connect to and calibrate your ECU. Once you have a licence, you can connect to ALL of the GEMS product line as you will be licenced to the software and not the hardware that you are using.

The current costs are £60 for the cable, GWv4 is FOC and downloadable from our web site and the licence for the software is £300. These are retail prices and trade prices are available for those businesses luck enough to have a VAT number.

The other option, is to take the vehicle to a 'GEMS aware' tuner, who will have all of the necessary hardware to perform a calibration for you. It all really depends on the amount of 'tinkering' that you want to do. If you are going to be under the bonnet on a regular basis, then you'd be better off getting your own cable and licence but if you just need a suitable calibration and leave it at that, I would suggest that you opt for the second option.

Whichever option that you choose, contact our 'sales' guys and I'm sure that they can be of assistance.
Hope that this helps, RickS

So after I buy all of them I will be able to live map the ecu? And after that how can I write the program to the chip. Do I have to buy a programmer and write it?

With GWv4, you can connect to the ECU, download the calibration that is currently installed, modify the calibration as you see fit and then upload the calibration back to the ECU.

No other software is required to calibrate and save settings to the ECU.

Well, one way would be to pull the lid off the ECU and see if there are any tell-tale stickers on the EPROM (or other components and/or connector). It will probably be G2.02 / V2.02 or similar...

An alternative method would be to hook the ECU to your PC/laptop and try to connect with GWv4. The software will then check the baud rate and if specified correctly, will ask for the appropriate .GIN file. You could then see if the requested .GIN file is in the downloads section of the website.

There were quite a few variants of this ECU, so if the version you want isn't obvious from checking the components or attempted connection, then drop the "tech.support" GEMS email a line and I'll see if I can find the required file hidden away somewhere.

If you take the lid off, take some photos and email them over also. A picture speaks a 1000 words, as they say..!

I hope that this helps...

Can U ask you something else? How can I check If the p8 I have in my car is a Gems modified one? I mean Is there some differences? The one I have has the cpu codes erased and a big gems sticker on it...also the eeprom is differnet than the other p8's and has some sticker on writing versio dont remember at the moment...Are these enough? Are there any other signs? Thanks again!!!

That does not sound familiar for a GEMS P8 ECU.
All of the public releases that I know of were V2, not V1...

When you try to connect using GWv4, if it asked for a .GIN file then it is probably a GEMS unit. If it doesn't, it probably isn't.

Also, if you look at the PCB, the initials G.E.M.S. are probably inscribed, unless it is a VERY early version.
Best regards,
RickS
