Ignition Coil

Post by Pete » Mon Feb 16, 2009 12:00 pm

Hi,
I have a K implant and am running G0.26, using a distributor and single coil. I want to replace the coil with a sport coil and wanted to know whether I should be looking for a low impedance (0.5ohm) or high impedance (3ohm) coil? For use up to 8500 RPM, I assume coil charge time is very limited at this speed. Is there a particular coil type I should be looking at or something you would recomend. Bosch or MSD Blaster.

Hi Pete,

Almost everything we do has a low impedance coil so i would go with that. Charge time here is a little short but would still be ok. Have you thought about going to a 2 coil wasted spark type system to reduce the stress on them?

I would like to reccommend a product to you but we don't like to get involved in reccomending particular products or brands. Sorry. It is always better to be over specified even if it is a little more money.

Hope this helps
Ed

Would you anticipate any issue in terms of the GEMS ECU driving an MSD 8253 coil. The resistance and current draw look demanding.

I planned to leave the Coil Factor set to 14.

Primary resistanace 0.16ohms
Inductance 3.5mH
Peak Current 450 mA
Spark duratuion 450 uS
