My computer doesn't appear to have a serial port

Post by R!C0 » Fri Feb 08, 2008 6:21 pm

Most ECUs connect to the serial port (rs-232). This is a 9-pin DIN style connector. Other ECUs connect to the computer by means of a USB cable.

Many modern desktops and laptops do not have serial ports as standard. If this is the case, then it is possible to expand your computer with a USB to Serial adapter or a PCI card. On laptops, there is often a PCMCIA connector. Serial adapters exist that can plug into the PCMCIA slot. In our experience, the PCMCIA adapters tend to be more reliable than the USB ones.
