Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
Moderators:R!C0, JonMan, RickS
OK, I see how daft I am, I need to use the DLOG99 software, the legacy "programme". I was looking for a setting in the GDA software to load a legacy file or use a legacy logger type...
Possibly good new, both a red and yellow LED were showing and the file is substantially bigger, so it's logged / written something. However, when I try and open the log with GDA or DLOG99 software it reports an unknown file type. However, when I tried to open the files that were already on the 4 cards I got with the loggers I had similar issues, but the software reported a different error. I have put this newly written log file at:
http://www.gatesgarth.com/DA99LOG.STF so you can see if you can open it. Seems we are making progress, and I am VERY grateful to you

No I didn't mean used Dlog, but that is progress. Its probably had the same effect.
In the GDA logger setup window, if you select DA99 setup from the left hand list. Then you will see a number of options to the right, top left most of which is Legacy DA99.
Attached is the same setup with this set.

Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
That file is the raw data from the card, you need to copy it to a local drive i.e. C:\, GDA will then allow you process it into a log file to select this: Logger > Select logger. Select DA99 logger on C:\. Then select: Logger > Download Log.
*EDIT: Just to make you aware, this file acts like a logger/card drive, for it to be recognised by GDA the file must always be named DA99LOG.stf

Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
I have posted some screenshots og how fresh installs of both GDA and GALOG99 do not seem to be working as they should. The same happens on my PC, from which the shots are taken, and my laptop. Ate you seeing sensible data being processed from the raw data on the card and shown in either of the two analysis apps Rico?

Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
Please re-read my last post. You can not open that file. That is the raw data from the logger, which will act as the logger when copied to C:\.
Also, please stick with GDA and leave Dlog alone.

OK, I now have a log, screenshot linked below. Should values not vary against time when I sweep the X axis, they just stay at the numbers they start with? Is this what I should be seeing? Thanks again, at last I seem to be doing something right? I hope....

Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
Thats the same as what I see. If you do another run on the logger, what do the lights do?
Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
OK so checking more docs, I have misunderstood some of the Motec details. The 'CAN 0 Transfer rate' is not the baud rate, but the sample rate, suggest changing this back to something like 100.
By default the M800 baud rate is 1Mhz, so I have attached another setup with the buad rate set to 1MHz.
Load this to the logger and see what we get.

I see red and yellow displayed together, here is a link to another log from this morning with your last setup file in the logger (-2.STU):R!C0 wrote:Thats the same as what I see. If you do another run on the logger, what do the lights do?

OK, will try this in a few minutes! Thanks Rico.R!C0 wrote:OK so checking more docs, I have misunderstood some of the Motec details. The 'CAN 0 Transfer rate' is not the baud rate, but the sample rate, suggest changing this back to something like 100.

Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
I loaded the latest (-3) >STU file in the logger and did another run. Same sort of "split" red / yellow LED and I have posted the latest log renamed as http://www.gatesgarth.com/GDA/DA99LOGnew.STF
It doesn't appear to increment either, sorry.

Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
Are you sure you have uploaded setup 3?
I extracted the setup from that last log file and it has the CAN baud rate set to 160Hz.
We need this set to 1Mhz.

Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
http://www.gatesgarth.com/GDA/DA99LOGcan100.STF is the last log, I definitely wrote the new setup file to the card and it seemed happy about it. What I have noticed is the time stamps on the log files is a generic date. Is there a battery in the logger that could be dead, and could it stop the logger holding a new setup? The file above is with the 100 setting you suggested and the latest setup file hopefully in the logger. How can I see from a log file what the logger setup actually is, it seems to tell me setup download is not available for this logger, or something similar, that's the gist of the message? We live out in the sticks, to cap it all my ISDN line keeps dropping, I think with the kids off school the local BT hardware is maxed out...
Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
YELLOW LIGHT! Right, now I am getting somewhere. I am not sure which of these two changes worked, but I tried a different PCMCIA card, and I also left the logger powered up for 20 minutes with the old card in it, with the thought that if the internal battery exists, and is re charged when the logger is in use, it may "do something". Well, one of those has done something, we have yellow (maybe green, looks yellow to me) on, and some graphical data, albeit some of the figures look odd.

This is with -3 setup and the Motec setup at a CAN refresh of 100 as you suggested. Have we got proper comms now?
Thanks, your patience is Saintly. Dare I ask what else has to be done?

Re: Help setting up DA99-L2 to read MOTEC CAN stream?
Yes, that looks right, we have some reasonable data. The CAN speed was right this time (in the GDA setup), that was the key.
So now its a case of adding the rest of the channels to the setup, then getting the scaling sorted.
In the setup you have (3) the CAN inputs have all been setup as per your motec custom data set. If you look in the CAN inputs in the logger setup you will see the first 28 (CAN1-CAN28). These relate to each of the channels sent out by the M800, so CAN1 = Engine RPM, CAN2 = Engine Temp, etc. Now look in the Channels > outputs section, you should now see how these have been linked up. So Engine RPM has its source set as CAN1, etc. These are that channels that are recorded. Now you need to do the rest of these channels. Also to get sensible values you need to setup scalars probably for most channels. See the scaling column, here is where you set the scaling. Scalars are set in the scalars section, which then can be selected in the outputs section. Most will be linear scalars. They define an offset, multiplier, min, max, etc. For these to be correct, you will need the information from Motec to know how the raw information should be scaled.
You can, do all the scaling in GDA post downloading, but its generally better practice to do it in the logger.
Hope this helps. Refer to the GDA manual if you get stuck.
I'm signing off for the weekend. Hope it goes well.
Regards
Rico
