Old GEMS 2 ECU for BMW G v1.0
Moderators:R!C0, JonMan, RickS
HI,
I would like to connect to a old GEMS 2 ECU for BMW M3 E30 from PRODRIVE.
The ECU should be from the early 90s.
It's stamped :
SN: 34417
Model : GEMS 2
Version : BMW G v1.00
I would like to know if it's possible to use GW4 and with witch GIN file or need to use original "GEMSCOM" software.
Can you tell me the pin out for connecting to this ECU : there is a DB9 plug at the back. I think that the RX /TX line should be the n° 5 & 6, no idea for ground.
Best regards

WOW.... That's an 'oldie'...! And pretty rare.
I've had a look in our archive and have found the attached file. The good news, is that you will be able to calibrate this with GWv4, rather than the old DOS software.
Have fun,
RickS

As a follow-up to the GIN file, I have attached a pinout for a 'non-synced' (Cam only) pinout that maybe of some interest. I would suspect that the serial comms would be on another connector as there is no mention of it in the attached diagram.

Re: Old GEMS 2 ECU for BMW G v1.0
Hi,
I get good connection with the ECU this afternoon by the additional serial plug at the back of the ECU.
I have found that on the DB9 connector, PIN N° 5 ECU should be connected to N°3 laptop, N°9 ECU to N°2 laptop, and ground line work with N°1 ECU to 5 laptop but may be this is not the right place.
May be have you some wiring diagram for this DB9 plug at the back ECU.
May be it was possible to connect a Potbox plus laptop on this plug ?
Best regards

Hi,
I'll have to see if there is anything buried away on someone's PC as I can't find a pinout for the GEMS2 connector in our archive.
Watch this space and I'll let you now what I find.

OK....
I've found a hand written document that shows the following......
PC Serial pins 2, 3 and 5 (Rx, Tx, and GND respectively) correspond to ECU Serial pins 6, 5 and 1 (and/or 4). The reason that it is '1 and/or 4' is that programming the unit could be difficult due to RF without this link.
Try this and see if it helps. I'll see what else I can find.
The Potbox is driven by GWv4, so if you are using that to calibrate the ECU it shouldn't be an issue. If you are using 'DISP' to calibrate, there is an earlier version of the potbox that was designed for 'DISP' and I will see if there is anything in the store that might suit.
